Melawi - part 2

--- the legacy and the economy ---

Here the things that I can gain during my 18 hours visit in Melawi. The name Melawi was taken from name of the river passing the village. People here are relied on gold mining, logging, palm oil plantation, rubber, and uranium (explored by the French). A few years ago, their life was above the level. There is no wonder if they brought a lot of money [hundreds million rupiahs] for shopping. They brought cash and they usually didn’t bargain at all for the things them bough. People usually had more than one car, and it was SUV with 4WD.

However, the world is turning now… the logging was restricted lead the sawmills terminated. The illegal gold mining also been shut down for the shake of natural conservation. It becomes doubled when the world economic recession hit almost every country, created the demand of palm oil and rubber declined. These conditions eventually lead the declining of people’s welfare.

--- what bout the infrastructure?----

well, yet this region located 'inside' the jungle (i said this coz the only thing u can see during the trip is the trees, then a city, the trees again,.... and finally Melawi) the access is not very difficult. The road is already there, but in some parts there are broken road. there are about 6 buses (bis patas) every day to bring u there. the schedule is started around 6 pm and it takes about 10-12 hours from ponti. u will need around Rp. 120,000 for the bus ticket. During the trip u will find a junction, which can bring u to malaysia (great huh?), but u are not gonna pass this way.. he..he... the bus will goes straight away to drop u at ur destination, melawi!
